Do you smell that?
Weird – I know. I was born with no sense of smell. Yep, I can taste everything. I even enjoy deconstructing a recipe at a restaurant and repeating it at home. So, while I can’t smell the food I can tell what ingredients are included in the overall end results. I think my sense of taste has evolved over my life the same as yours has. I just may taste things differently than you. One thing I have noticed is that I prefer stronger foods such as dried tomatoes, greek olives, kale, extra strong coffee, and very sweet things. A mild manner food doesn’t excite me as much as a good chunk of blue cheese – as an example.
How food looks is very important to me. If it looks very appetizing or well placed on the plate I am more likely to be interested. If the food looks bland, over cooked, less than well presented, I may not welcome it to my plate. So the appearance of food and how fresh it looks plays a big role in how much I will enjoy the meal. I guess this is the same for everyone.
What would you do if you couldn’t smell anything? I rejoice that I can’t smell sweaty people on the metro after a long day, pollution, overwhelming perfume on someone, bodily functions (you know what I mean here – farts). I bet if I gained my sense of smell suddenly I would want to lose it just as quick.
